Mãos na Massa
The project was founded by a group of St Paul’s students who felt it was their duty to help the Brazilian population. Their mission is to improve the lives of underprivileged people with physical or mental disabilities in the poverty-stricken communities of São Paulo. The project has done this by selecting handicapped people that live in homes that are not adapted to their disability and help them by building or renovating their houses. Mãos na Massa operates with a group of specialized masons and architects that teach our volunteers how to construct houses, and that’s how they can build people’s dreams, brick by brick, step by step.
Projeto Mãos na Massa focuses on helping those who find themselves in underprivileged and compromising positions. The project focuses on building or renovating housing of underprivileged people who possess some form of disability, be it mental or physical. Mãos na Massa aims to make great differences in people’s everyday lives helping them overcome daily struggles.
Previous Projects:
1
Mãos Na Massa's first project was building Sid and Lu's house. The initiative came about through Adriel Messias, who informed Mãos Na Massa leaders that Sid was blind and did not have any money to finish his house. With this, Mãos na Massa emerged, and it has been helping others in need ever since.
2
Mãos Na Massa then started acting upon the Pequeno Cotolengo Paulista, an institution that cares for children and adults with physical or mental disabilities. There, classrooms were modernised, walls were refurbished and a water box was added.
3
After that, Mãos na Massa built a house with wheelchair access for Rosangela, who became paraplegic after having a stroke. The project worked to expand her room and to cover parts of the slab of the house.
4
After seeing Rosangela, a woman in crutches by the side of the road in the middle of the rain, Mãos na Massa leaders decided to pull-over and drive her to her house, which they then helped refurbish to make it more accessible for wheelchair access.
5
Following this, Mãos na Massa worked on the refurbishing of the playground of Marechal Deodoro Fonseca school, which was not well-suited for pupils with disabilities. As such, members worked to build ramps, fix benches, and paint the walls, all during the pandemic.
6
Next, Maos na Massa worked on building a playroom at Casa Thaienny, an institute that provides accomodation and support to children and teenagers in São Paulo.
Upcoming projects
Currently, Mãos na Massa is continuing work on Casa Thaienny, while also working to promote and inaugurate the Ecovila houses that were built last term.
